Zachary High Beta Club Cooks Up a Fundraiser for National Convention Trip

By Emily Faget

Students help serve jambalaya at the annual fund-raiser. They are raising money for the Beta national convention in June.

The Zachary High School Beta Club held its annual jambalaya sale on April 13. The proceeds from the event will go toward the club's trip to the national Beta convention in Myrtle Beach, Fla. this summer.

Cathy Raziano, Zachary High Beta faculty sponsor, explained this is just one way Beta gets involved with the community.

"We do so many things I can't even remember them all at once," she joked.

The Beta Club helps with a number of community benefits throughout the year, including Relay for Life, Pumpkin Patch and LSU football game concessions.

"I like to think of it as training the future leaders of our community," Raziano said.

Mike Jones is one of those future leaders. Jones won the seat of National Beta president last year. He beat every state president in the country to become the national leader.

Jones takes this honor seriously and travels to as many state conventions as possible during the year.

But Jones isn't the only one who goes beyond the call of duty. Maggie Joyner, Beta state secretary and Zachary High School student, will run for national secretary in Myrtle Beach.

With a catchy campaign slogan,"It's Maggie...Join Her," Joyner hopes to earn the responsibilities of secretary. This would mean creating national newsletters and organizing conventions.

Yet the job doesn't seem daunting for Joyner.

"I'd be excited to take on that responsibility," she said.

Conventions like the one in Myrtle Beach this summer are always filled with fun and friendly competition. Beta members have the change to put on skits, learn to tango and compete in the "Quiz Bowl."

The jambalaya sale will help Beta members join Joyner and Jones at the national convention.
