Where’s Zachary?
By Sheila Joyner

While applying for a job with the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board a little more than 20 years ago, I was told a teaching position had become available at Zachary High School. My response was: “Where’s Zachary?”

The personnel lady explained that Zachary was in the northwest part of East Baton Rouge Parish. She told me I needed to go see Zachary High Principal Jerry Boudreaux for an interview. After five years at LSU, I did not know of Zachary’s existence much less that it was so close to Baton Rouge.

Anyway, the next day I found my way to this very small town; met with Mr. Boudreaux; and was immediately offered the teaching position. Wow! What a fantastic principal! I knew I would like the people in the town because the administrators and teachers were so friendly. I figured the students must have been just a good.

When we arrived 20 years ago Zachary did not even have a McDonald’s Restaurant. The main place you ate was LeBlanc’s or the old Sonic on Hwy. 19. The nice restaurants were all in Baton Rouge. Back then we went to Baton Rouge three or four times each week to shop for clothes, wedding presents, household items, etc.

Today I rarely got to Baton Rouge to shop. Zachary has everything we need. Within a six-mile radius you can buy wonderful clothes for adults, teens or children. There are many very nice boutique shops. We have great stores for wedding presents, birthday presents, unique home items or anything your heart desires.

You can buy cars in Zachary; do all of your family or your business banking right here; take care of your insurance needs; and even get a great hairstyle. The list of stuff that is available in Zachary these days is endless. We have some of the finest doctors and medical facilities in the country right here and plenty of excellent restaurants.

Over the last 20 years people throughout the area and the entire state of Louisiana have come to know where Zachary is because of our wonderful school system and our great business environment. Why spend extra time and gas riding all around Baton Rouge when you can get what you need right here in Zachary where we have it all?

We urge you to take note of the many wonderful businesses and churches noted in the center section of this issue and all of the special things they do to make our lives better. This is just a fraction of all that Zachary has to offer. Read what our citizens say about why Zachary is special. We need to remind ourselves every day how fortunate we are to live in this extraordinary place.
And since we are talking in this issue about all the things that make Zachary special, we need to mention the way new members of the Zachary community are so warmly welcomed. New people are made to feel at home in Zachary from the first day just as though they have lived here forever.
