New Cardiovascular Center Recently Open for Business
Lane’s new Cardiology Program is as essential to the future development of the Northern two thirds of East Baton Rouge Parish as good schools, lower home prices and the clean air breathed by the new people moving to Zachary and Central.
As a matter of fact, Lane Regional Medical Center was started in the late 1950’s by East Baton Rouge City/Parish leaders as a means of spurring development of the rural area north of the City of Baton Rouge.
Today Lane Memorial is living up to its promise by offering a comprehensive heart and vascular program specializing in clinical/diagnostic cardiology with a full range of evaluations and treatments. This includes pacemaker/ICD and stent placements, cardiac and peripheral vascular services, EKG, treadmill stress testing, nuclear medicine studies, nutrition counseling and cardiovascular rehabilitation.
Diagnosis and Treatment
All of this is due to Lane’s brand new freestanding 9,250 square foot Cardiovascular Center which is bringing the most advanced cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment capability to Zachary and the surrounding areas.
“The $4 million project features a complete state-of-the-art catherization lab and new Toshiba 64 slice CT scanner in the same suite. It is the first for the Baton Rouge Region,” said interventional cardiologist Dr. Yunus Moosa.
Right now Lane Memorial serves Hospital District 1 which includes Zachary, Baker and areas to the north and east including Central, and the western portion of Livingston Parish including Clinton, St. Francisville and Woodville, MS. Completion of the Audubon Bridge which is projected to happen in 2010 will enable the hospital to serve patients on both sides of the river.
A Real Life Saver
Lane Memorial provides the only emergency room in the northern two thirds of East Baton Rouge Parish. In the case of heart attack suffers, the proximity to the hospital to Zachary and Central is a real life saver. Given the traffic problems Baton Rouge has experienced since hurricane Katrina five years ago, many heart attack victims today could not survive the trip to the hospitals in the southern end of the parish.
“This new center allows us to offer rapid cardiac response and treatment to patients who previously had to travel more than 30 minutes into Baton Rouge,” said interventional cardiologist Dr. Charles Thompson.
While Lane is not equipped to do open-heart surgery, the hospital does provide all phases of interventional care for victims of heart attack. All OBGYN services are provided at Lane Memorial and a full birthing unit for labor and delivery is offered plus all general surgery and internal medicine. There are also complete facilities for day surgery and many special procedures including hyperbaric, oxygen therapy, and complete wound care. There is also a telemetry unit for heart patients and physical therapy including in-patient and rehabilitation therapy.
Dr. Moosa said “We can now create a complete 3D reconstruction of the heart and the major vessels of the body and perform all cardiovascular procedures except open heart surgery.”
Latest Technology
Lane Memorial Hospital is bringing Zachary and all of the areas in the northern two-thirds of East Baton Rouge Parish the most advanced cardiology center in the region with the newest cath lab facility in the area and the latest technology in 64-slice scanning.
Changes and improvement at Lane Memorial are happening fast. The hospital’s new $9 million Medical office Building is in track to be the first three-story structure in Zachary. It will open in January as a 63,000 square foot facility that can house up to 16 physician offices.
People in Zachary are rightly proud of their number one school system and their Broncos winning ways on the gridiron, but there is also reason to take pride in their community hospital. Lane Memorial is providing first quality medical care to an expanding service area, and it keeps getting better and better.
Lane Regional welcomes Dr. Reagan E. Elkins, a family physician, to the staff of Zachary Family Practice. He is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Dr. Elkins received his undergraduate degree from Louisiana College in Pineville, La., and his medical education from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. During medical school, he was awarded the Dr. Gerald R. Gehringer Award for Outstanding Student in Family Medicine.
Dr. Elkins is a native of Alexandria, La and worked previously with the Medicine Clinic of Morgan City. He has a wife, Leslie, and a 1 ˝-year-old daughter Joy Vianne.
