Are You Suffering From Venous Disease?

In the United Sates, 50 percent of the adult population suffers from painful and unsightly vein diseases. The most common forms are varicose and spider veins.

Varicose veins are dilated and ropy appearing blue vessels visible under the skin.   Varicose veins typically cause: pain or aching, swollen legs, leg heaviness and fatigue, skin changes and ulcerations, muscle cramps, restless leg, and burning or numbness. One or all of the symptoms may be an indication of venous disease.

The venous system is made up of superficial and deep veins. Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart. Venous disease develops when the valves that keep blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart become damaged or diseased. Venous disease in the superficial veins and their branches is often the underlying cause of painful varicose veins.

Many factors contribute to the presence of venous disease, the prime cause of varicose and spider veins, including: age, gender, family history, multiple pregnancies, being overweight and prolonged standing.

Traditionally, patients diagnosed with venous disease would undergo vein-stripping surgery in the hospital.   Now patients can be treated with a minimally invasive alternative to painful vein stripping surgery as an office procedure.   There is no reason to continue to suffer from painful and unsightly vein diseases.
