Students and parents/guardians joined faculty and staff of Kenilworth Middle School (KMS) for their first R.A.P.P. Session on December 6. R.A.P.P. is the acronym for Reaching to Achieve Parental Participation and was developed to extend a warm welcome to the adults who are responsible for the students at KMS. Activities of this type are offered periodically as a way to involve parents/guardians and the surrounding community in the school’s mission and activities. Through efforts such as the R.A.P.P. Session, teachers work collaboratively and creatively with colleagues, parents, and the community to engage them productively in the school, contribute to the effectiveness of the school, and ultimately benefit the students.

After enjoying a light dinner provided by Albertson’s, Wal-Mart, and the KMS Parent/Faculty Association, participants were introduced to the various resources available to students. Topics covered included the

• school’s identification tags
• planners
• school and homework website
• the Parent/Faculty Association
• and State Department of Education resources including:
• the Grade Level Expectations , P.A.S.S. (www.louisianapass.org - Screen Name: student/Password: tiger) and Newton’s Classroom
• Baton Rouge area tutoring services and community resources including:
• computer usage and classes

Barbara Roos from the East Baton Rouge Parish Public Library provided details about the public library’s offerings and opportunities. Glenda Chambers represented the Kenilworth neighborhood as she provided assistance where needed, and
Bob Matthews from the Kenilworth Civic Association served as the session’s photographer.

Eight parents and students attended the Focus on LEAP Readiness Presentation presented by teachers including Ms. B. Gentry-Norton, Mrs. M. Guidry, Ms. L. Fleet, Ms. K. McKenzie. Sixth and seventh graders rotated between sessions focusing on math and literacy including “Accelerating Literacy with Accelerated Reader (AR)“ hosted by Mrs. C. Knight, NBCT, “Fluency” presented by Mrs. M. Lawrence and Mrs. C. Zubik, and “Math Mania” presented by collaborating partners Mrs. K. Ruffin and Ms. J. Winfrey.

The evening, co-coordinated by Mrs. Knight and Ms. S. Varnado in collaboration with the faculty listed above, culminated with door prizes given out to participants who completed a session evaluation. Mrs. B. Favret, Mr. C. LeBlanc, and Ms. B. McFadden supported the session. Participants viewed Mr. Thomas’ Art class students’ work and holiday decorations displayed throughout the school.
