Kenilworth’s Luminaries
Set for Sunday, Dec. 21
By Paul Sicard, Board Member
Kenilworth Civic Association
For many years the residents of Kenilworth Subdivision have participated in Luminaries on the Sunday before Christmas. This year hundreds of carloads of children and adults will tour the South Baton Rouge neighborhood starting at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21st.
Luminaires is the lighting of small tea candles or votive candles dropped into paper bags partially filled with sand or kitty litter and placed along curbs and sidewalks. The thousands of glowing expressions of faith create a beautiful display that is designed to light Santa’s way into homes in the subdivision on Christmas Eve just three nights later.
Kenilworth is also well known for the many homes that are so beautifully decorated for the holiday season this time of year and that invite visitors to come by and have a look. A competition is sponsored by the Kenilworth Civic Association each year. Last year’s judges for the lighting contest were Secretary of State and Mrs. Jay Dardenne and Mr. Bob Davidge, recently retired chief administrator for Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. Categories and winners last year were as follows:
Best Live Portrayal: St.Edmunds Court
Best Block: Amesbury
Best Lighting: 1103 Stoneleigh
Best Religious Theme: 917 Louray
Best Mailbox: 1221 Chippenham
Best Door: 1626 Stoneleigh
Most Original: 1518 Louray
Judges' Choice: 1038 Bromley
It is a very special time of year for the residents of Kenilworth as block after block is lit on Luminaries Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. There are hayrides and holiday music as people from as far away as Gonzales and St. Francisville tour the neighborhood.
Y’all come see!
