Writing a solid and thorough essay is a skill that takes practice and knowledge. A well-built essay consists of an outstanding theme analyzed in a few paragraphs using specific examples. Transitions, vivid language, and proper sentence structure can all add to the overall look of your essay, but these guidelines should help you form the backbone:

I. Analyze the topic . Note things on scratch paper that immediately come to mind.

II. Decide what you know and what you don’t . Do not include details that you are not familiar with. Be sure to elaborate on topics that you know well.

III. Arrange your essay in outline form . This will keep you focused and on track while writing your essay. This will also ensure that you include all the information you know so that the essay flows smoothly.

IV. Write the essay . Make sure to include an introduction, body, and conclusion. The body paragraphs should elaborate on the points made in your outline.

V. Reread and revise . If time allows, you should read your completed essay and make any grammar and spelling changes.

A solid essay is backed up by concrete evidence and specific examples. You should be prepared to defend any information you decided to include in your essay. Always follow your teacher’s instructions and check with him/her before varying from the assigned topic.
