Four Achieve Eagle Status in
St. Jude’s Boy Scout Troops
By Paul Sicard

The celebration lamp is on as four scouts from Troop 103 at St. Jude School on Highland Road achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this summer, the highest honor in Scouting.

At a recent Troop 103 (St. Jude School) Court of Honor are (from left) Marshall Grigg, Matthew Adler, Peter Sicard, Davy Goldsmith (2006 Eagle Scout), Haggai Davis III, Spencer Billings, previous Scoutmaster Dave Goldsmith, and current Scoutmaster Cliff Durand.  (Not present was Assistant Scout Master Charles Stephens.)

Scouts are required to earn 21 Merit Badges and demonstrate Scout Spirit, service and leadership to earn this all important rank.   This includes the planning, organizing and leading fellow Scouts in the performance of an Eagle project.

The Scouts earning Eagle rank this summer were Charles Stephens, Haggai Davis III, Peter Sicard and Matthew Adler.

  • Charles Stephens is now a freshman at LSU majoring in business.   His Eagle project was to organize a drive to collect donations of personal items for residents at Lakewood Quarters nursing home, including building donation boxes.

  • Haggai Davis is a junior at Catholic High School .   His Eagle project was to design and built benches and garbage can holders and a new sign at the Catholic Deaf Center on Brightside Drive .

  • Peter Sicard is also a Catholic High School junior.   His Eagle project was to design and build several storage shelves for the St.Vincent dePaul homeless shelter on Convention Street.

  • Matthew Adler is a sophomore at Catholic High.   His Eagle project was to build storage lockers and storage hangers for the changing rooms at the St. Jude school gym.

These Scouts are to be congratulated on their achievements.

Two other Scouts from the Troop, Marshall Grigg and Spencer Billings, became Eagles in 2008.   Several other Scouts from Troop 103 are expected to earn Eagle rank in the next several months.   Since 1990, Troop 103 has produced 30 Eagle Scouts.   Only 2 percent of those who enter Scouting earn the coveted Eagle rank.   Every astronaut who has walked on the moon has been an Eagle Scout.

Troop 103 Scouts spend a week each summer at Camp working on merit badges and enjoying outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting.   In the past few years, they have gone to Camp Comer in northeast Alabama, Camp Rainey Mountain in northeast Georgia and our own Camp Avondale in Clinton, LA.   A group of Troop 103 Scouts participated in a twelve day backpacking trek at the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico in 2008, including climbing 12,000 foot Mt.Baldy.

Congratulations and thanks go to Dave Goldsmith and Cliff Durand, who have served as Scoutmasters for these Scouts. Troop 103 is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 9692.

The Boy Scout program aims to develop American citizens who are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit,   who have the desire and skills to help others, and who will be prepared to participate in and provide leadership in American society.
Scouting instills the values of good conduct, respect and honesty. Scouts learn skills that will last a lifetime, including basic outdoor skills, first aid, citizenship skills, leadership skills and how to get along with others.
