Homelike Atmosphere for Seniors

It looks just like any other large, beautifully landscaped
home in Broadmoor Subdivision.
The fact
is, however, The Cottage at Broadmoor is leading a wave of change in the way
senior citizens live and receive the care they need.
Conveniently located just blocks off
“We are a personal care home with a maximum of eight residents,” explained Nisey Mayeaux Ward, program manager at The Cottage. “The goal is to make residents feel as though they are at home.”
Keep Seniors at Home
Placing Personal Care Homes in A-1 neighborhoods is a
relatively new idea that requires vision and understanding on the part of all
involved parties, but it is being done more and more in

Price depends on level of required care, but is comeptitve

“We bought the home on November 15, 2006, remodeled it extensively
and then received our license on December 17, 2007,” said Owner/Manager Maria
Tarleton.
“We are governed by the same
regulations as other assisted living institutions such as
Horizons Personal Care
Tarleton explained that her other business is Horizons
Personal Care which is designed to provide everything elderly people need to
remain in their own home.
They provide
services such as shopping, medication reminders and companionship.
Staff members accompany clients to
appointments; help them with personal shopping, laundry, bathing, dressing,
grooming, feeding, light housekeeping and meal preparation.
“The mission of Horizons is to serve families and individuals
who need assistance in maintaining or achieving their full potential for
self-reliance and independent living no matter where they call home,” explained
Tarleton.
“We do not provide ‘sitters.’
We provide trained “hands on” caregivers who
maximize the independence, dignity and quality of life of the person receiving
care.”
Despite this, Tarleton said she really loves assisted living as it is practiced at The Cottage at Broadmoor. “We do more than just provide a ‘homelike environment’ The Cottage actually is home. If a resident’s children and grandchildren want to get together and prepare dinner together on a Sunday with mom or dad then they just come in and take over the kitchen and do it.”
24-Hour Personal Care
Studies show that people remain continent longer and
ambulate longer in a personal care home according to Mayeaux-Ward.
“We keep a 24-hour log minute-by-minute as we
provide complete 24-hour personal care.
We
liken life to a candy bar and desire for our residents’ last bite to be as good
as their first bite”.
“This is a hands-on, one-step-at-a-time approach that is simply impossible to deliver in an institutional environment,” explained Tarleton. “Our goal is to change the face of long term care by duplicating The Cottage at Broadmoor model in lots of area neighborhoods.”
“Family members just drop by or call daily to see what kind of a day mama is having. The goal is down home living that is person centered. This is the cutting edge of senior care in today’s world,” said Tarleton.
