Annual Orchid Show and Sale
The Baton Rouge Orchid Society will present its 29th annual Orchid Show and Plant Sale on July 12 - 13 at the Baton Rouge Garden Center, 7950 Independence Blvd. The theme of the Show is "Orchid Paradise." Orchid societies Houma, Lafayette, Alexandria, Mobile, and others across the Gulf South will stage exhibits to carry out this theme. This Show and Sale provide an opportunity to experience the sight and smell of hundreds of exotic orchids in one place. Although people are usually surprised to learn that orchids are fragrant, some of them are wonderfully so.

The Show is free and open to the public. Dates and times are Saturday, July 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Throughout the Show members of the Baton Rouge Orchid Society will be on hand to greet guests, provide guidance in purchasing plants, and answer questions about orchid culture.

A number of commercial vendors will have plants in bloom B as well as plants ranging seedlings to blooming size B to sell. Prices are reasonable, and cultural information will be available. Author, Daniel Trask to Visit Library

Author, Daniel Trask, will be at the Main Library on Monday, June 9, at 7:00 p.m. Trask will be discussing his latest book, DMR, as well as his experiences with self-publishing. DMR is the story of a recent college graduate’s first six months in the real world, working as a direct caregiver within the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation. Trask chose to avoid the conventional route to publication with his first book, My Dog the Meat Eater. He created his own publishing company, One Tiny Pizza and has published both of his own novels as well as his grandfather’s WWII memoir, Harry’s War. Trask was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in biology from UMass Amherst in 2006, Trask worked for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation for six months. He will begin a graduate program in biomedicine this fall. In order to underwrite an ambitious book tour this summer, he has worked as a copy editor and a security guard. He plans to travel 16,000 miles in 48 states promoting his book. Book & Math Buds Training For Teens

Teens interested in volunteering at the Library are invited to attend a training workshop for Book and Math Buds at the Zachary Branch on Monday, June 2, at 9:00 a.m. or at the Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Boulevard, on Friday, June 6, at 10:30 a.m. Book Buds is a reading program that pairs volunteer teens with children in second through fourth grades. Teens help their buddies select books from staff-approved materials, read to them, and serve as reading coaches. Math Buds is not math tutoring! Instead, teen volunteers will use games like Checkers, Chess, Battleship, Connect 4 and other fun activities to help children improve math skills and critical thinking. Tween Chat
The Zachary Branch Library Teen Council will be holding a four-part program where sixth through eighth grade girls can spend time with teen girls who have made it through the ‘tween years successfully. The years between being a child and a teenager are a time when strong opinions are formed and girls are torn between wanting to stand out and wanting to fit in. This program is designed to guide girls on how to e happy and healthy as they enter a world of more independence, peer pressure and emotions. The program will be held at the Zachary Branch. Anna West is a poet, educator and community arts organizer. She has innovated youth writing programs in diverse community settings for eight years. She served as the Program Director of Young Chicago Authors (YCA) from 2000-2005 and was the co-founder of YCA’s Say What Magazine and Louder Than A Bomb, the highly acclaimed Chicago Teen Poetry Slam. She holds a B.A. in creative writing and has taught community arts pedagogy at Columbia College Chicago and Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education. West recently returned to her hometown of Baton Rouge to start WorldPlay at the Big Buddy Program. This program is sponsored in part by funds from the Louisiana State Arts Council and the Louisiana Division of the Arts and by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge through the Decentralized Arts Funding Program.These programs for teens will be held in June at the following libraries. Steppin’ with Tanisha
Tanisha Roby will share the artistic style of African American “step-dancing” with local teens at libraries this summer. The art of stepping was popularized by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. fraternities and sororities. Although it has evolved over the years, the overall purpose is to display the creative abilities of the African American Diaspora, the distinctive themes of the respective Greek organizations, and the passing of the African-American traditions through generations. Face Painting Demystified
T eens are invited to a creative face painting workshop at several libraries this June. Melanie and Melissa Babin will demonstrate various techniques on how to create simple and complicated designs. They will discuss how they learned creative face painting and how they have been able to market their art. The Babin sisters are both in the eighth grade and have been painting for over six years. They specialize in face and body painting and have painted faces at various festivals and events including Live After 5 and Oktoberfest.

Space Fun
Children, ages 3 and up, can visit the stars with MARS! The Mobile Astronomy Resource System (MARS) will be at two libraries in June. Chris Kersey, the manager of the Highland Road Observatory, will talk to children about the solar system. Following the presentation, children will be able to look through an optical telescope for solar viewing, as well as view several space displays and demonstrations. Furry Friends

Two local animal groups will be visiting libraries this June to talk to children about proper animal care. Volunteers from the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) will present their program, B-CAAWS You Care to children, ages 6 to 9. They will discuss everything from healthy diets for pets to proper grooming. They will also have a furry guest for the children to meet. The program will be at the Eden Park Branch on Monday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. and at the Baker Branch on Friday, June 20, at 10:00 a.m. Registration is required for this event. Baton Rouge Youth Ballet Presents Graduation Ball
The Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre’s Youth Ballet will present the ballet, Graduation Ball, in the month of June at various libraries. Graduation Ball is a light-hearted comic ballet set to the music of Johann Strauss, inspired by a piece by David Lichine. At a graduation dance, both the young ladies from a fashionable Viennese academy and the young men from the neighboring military school must work to overcome their mutual shyness while keeping an eye on the budding romance between the girls’ headmistress and the boys’ commanding officer. Draw with Chuck Galey

Popular children’s book illustrator, Chuck Galey, will give a drawing lesson to ages, 5 to 11, at all thirteen locations of the Library this summer. Chuck's presentation will thrill young readers and teach them how to draw the strangest things they have ever seen! Galey has illustrated over 50 books for educational publishers around the country. Farmer Minor and Daisy The Reading Pig
How many pigs like to read? At least one named Daisy! Farmer Minor and Daisy, the pot-bellied reading pig, will once again present their famous program, “Pig Out on Reading” at all thirteen locations of the Library this summer. Children, ages 4 to 11, will learn all about Daisy and how much fun they can have reading! Daisy has appeared on television and in newspapers across the United States broadcasting her mission, which is to encourage children to develop a love for reading. Playmakers Present Planet Nobuk
Playmakers of Baton Rouge will once again stop by all thirteen locations of the Library for their 2008 Neighborhood Professional Tour. This summer they will dazzle audiences with the play, Planet Nobuk. Written by New Orleans playwright, Morrey McElroy, it follows the life of Flip, a Nobuk child. On Planet Nobuk everything is kerflooey – nothing seems to work, everyone is cranky, and the food stinks! Flip realizes that something is wrong but he cannot put his finger on what it is. Summer Chess
The East Baton Rouge Parish Library’s popular chess program will continue with summer classes for ages, 9 and up! Volunteers from the Baton Rouge Chess Club will teach the basics of chess to beginners and intermediate level players. There will be a total of six classes and participants are encouraged to attend as many as possible.
