Aftershocks
Several years ago, as the history goes, someone in our
congregation noted that
UBC has a rich heritage as a community-church. Beginning in
1947 at Stubbs Hall on the campus of LSU, our church has seen its fair share of
change. Even more, by God’s grace we continue to step forward in time. While
reaching out to the University community – faculty, staff, and students – we
have also sought to minister in other ways. One of our most visible ministries
is “To Highland with Love.” With this effort, many in our congregation
volunteer their time and talents to become “reading friends.” We also seek to meet
the needs of many young parents through Mothers of Preschools (MOPS), which
aims to support and encourage moms as they face the challenges of parenthood.
In addition, we are one year into an effort with the YMCA. Together we’re
ministering at the corner of
Our history aside, I write mainly to invite you to one of our next ministry efforts – one that might move us from secrecy into plain view. Our church’s music ministry soon presents “Of Faith and Freedom,” which is a musical tracing our nation’s legacy of liberty. At 10:30am, Sunday, June 15th, the combined choirs of UBC will sing with the accompaniment of a 30 member orchestra. As part of our morning worship, we deeply desire to honor God by giving voice to our praise for the freedom to worship and express our devotion to Christ Jesus. “Of Faith and Freedom” provides a wonderful occasion for our church to minister to our community and those who’ve offered sacrifice for the cause of peace. I hope you will join us on June 15th for our service. And may the peace of God reign in our hearts and in our world.
In the open,
Jay Hogewood
