Greg McDougall Becomes
Chamber Interim Director
Longtime Zachary business leader Greg McDougall was recently named Interim Director of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce.
“We are going to see if it’s a fit,” McDougall said. “The title has to be ‘interim’ for right now.”
McDougall is a retired banking executive with 38 years of experience who spent most of his career working with business people in and around Zachary. He is a specialist in commercial and retail lending who served as branch manager for a couple of different local banks.
The new Chamber head said he has always enjoyed working with members of the business community in his home town. He served his second term on the Zachary Chamber Board of Directors in 2007-2008.
Lots of Changes
McDougall noted that the town has changed a lot over the past four decades. “The fact that we now have the number one school system in the state has caused a lot of growth in recent years,” he said.
Right now the Zachary Chamber is working closely with the City of Zachary. “Zachary was one of 12 cities chosen from among 25 that applied for the Development Ready Community Program,” McDougall said. “We just had our first strategic planning seminar. The program is brand new, but the Chamber and the city have been working together on it for several years.”
The city’s expansion means Zachary has more to offer than ever before, according to McDougall. “Now if you want a good New Orleans Po-Boy you can get one right here in Zachary,” he said. “We have many fine retail businesses, but we really need to add some light industrial.”
Noting that the Zachary Chamber now has 270 members he said he recalls that in the 1970’s there were about 50. “I believe we are the second fastest growing city in Louisina,” he said. “We have gone from around 4,000 people back then to over 15,000 residents today.”
