We all know that living a healthy lifestyle is the key to looking and feeling great. The problem is finding the time, the will power, and the knowledge to start and maintain that routine every day. Well, now is as good a time as ever for YOU to get started!
The Basics
Foremost, you must adapt your lifestyle to eating well and getting active! This combination allows for the best result. One without the other is like an LSU game without a tailgate party.
The best way to insure that you are eating well is to know
what you are eating. Reading package labels and being aware of the amount of
calories you take in is the best way to monitor your food intake.
Another good guideline is that fresh, unprocessed food is best. Basically, if you can pronounce and/or recognize all of the ingredients, then the food is probably fairly healthy. When it comes to activity, any motion is good motion. Whatever gets you moving and keeps you that way is a good activity choice. Choose activities that you enjoy to become active without exercise feeling like a chore. Your aim should be increasing your heart rate while keeping things fun and simple. The goal is to be active five or more days per week for about 30 minutes per day.
Finding the Time
& Motivation
Keeping up with the food that you take in and being active on most or all days of the week seems time consuming. At first, it can be difficult to adapt your day to a healthy lifestyle, but it is not as bad as you may think.
It takes only a few seconds to flip over a box and see what is in your favorite snack foods and household staples. You may be shocked when you find out the amount of fat and calories that you take in on any given day. Once you realize how nutritionally expensive some of your favorite treats are, it will be much easier to limit or eliminate them from your grocery list.
Finding time to exercise is often the most difficult step, but consider the recommendations above. The goal is to be active for as little as 30 minutes a day (that’s only one television show!), five or so days per week. Skipping just one show per night or even being active while watching one of your favorite programs can be enough. Make the time, and you will enjoy the result.
Choosing Your
Environment
Finding the active environment that best fits you is imperative to starting and maintaining an active lifestyle. Each person may find success in different environments. You may prefer your home, your neighborhood or a nearby health club. Wherever feels comfortable is the best place for you.
Home can be a great place to train because it is convenient and familiar. However, it can be difficult to detach from normal life and perform your daily activity without distractions. Being active in your neighborhood or nearby parks will allow some separation from home while getting you out and about. Training near your home is wonderful when it works. Certain factors may inhibit you from performing your daily activities, such as time constraints, environmental conditions, and boredom.
A third option is to join a health club. Just like any other purchase, it is best to have an idea of your needs and find a place that will fit all or most of them. Find one that is close and convenient to your home. If the location is inconvenient – let’s face it – you will not go. Also, look for a gym that fits your schedule, if you have time to workout at 8 p.m. and the gym closes at 8 p.m., you will not adjust your schedule to go earlier. Find a gym that fits your schedule. Take notice of the type and condition of the equipment, if your favorite pieces of equipment are not present or not in working order, you will probably not enjoy having to find new favorites.
A perk that you may enjoy at some facilities is a professional training staff. A personal trainer may be just what you need to give you the know-how, direction, and motivation to send you on the path to your goal. The atmosphere can also be very important to keeping you active several times per week; if the facility or current members look unsavory to you then it is best to keep searching. Overall, use your judgment. Just like any other purchase, take the time to get in there and find exactly what you are looking for.
Getting your healthy lifestyle started is the hardest
part.
It takes some time, effort and
commitment, but once you find your niche it is simpler to maintain.
As humans we are accustomed to habit and
routine. In a short time from now, you can be active and eating well.
At that point, you will find it is just as
tough to get out of that new routine, as it was to get out of the old one. Get
the ball rolling, it will be tough to stop!
