This year I will become a
golfer (or a better golfer)!
In golf, unlike most sports, you don’t have to be big, strong, fast or part of a great team to be successful, according to Tom Agazzi, PGA Golf Professional at Copper Mill Golf Club.
Anyone – men, women, young or old, amateur or professional can enjoy golf.
Golf is sometimes rewarding, often frustrating and highly addictive, says Agazzi.
Here are some helpful tips to begin your journey with this sport:
1. Don't waste your money on expensive clubs until you have reached a basic level of competency. A big mistake made by beginner golfers is that they rush out and buy a brand new set of shiny and expensive golf clubs. You should keep in mind that today's golf equipment comes in great varieties that cater to different golfing types and abilities. Since you're just starting out, you do not know which set fits you best. Rental clubs are offered at most golf facilities. Use those first.
2. Don't go near a Golf Course until you have reached a basic level. Start off at a driving range, take at least four or five lessons, learn the fundamentals, progress to a nine-hole course and eventually venture out to an 18-hole golf course. It will be a lot more fun for you and those around you if you follow this path.
3. Get lessons from a qualified professional. Certified Golf Professionals are the only people who are qualified to teach you how to play the game. Even the world's top players have a coach and take lessons. It is much more beneficial to learn the tips and tricks from a professional than from people at the range who will teach you their 'innermost secrets' of golf.
4. To build a sound golf swing, learn the fundamentals: Grip, Stance and Posture.
5. Watch the Pro's on TV, or better still video them and play back
in slow motion. You will learn a lot by doing that.
6. Practice, Practice, Practice!
Going to the driving range, putting green or practice bunker are
great ways to practice.
Don’t forget to always
challenge yourself to get to the next level.
7. Learn the rules and golf etiquette. Some basic beginner etiquette tips are: make a tee time and show up on time and adhere to the courses dress code. Play the ball as it lies; be aware of your pace - try not to keep other golfers behind you waiting; and take good care of the course.
