The Central Thruway project is well on its way toward completion. The Thruway will allow for a more efficient route out of Central to the interstate.
When finished, the expressway will connect Sullivan Road in Central to Interstate 12 and Florida Boulevard. The project is currently the largest public works project in East Baton Rouge Parish.
The project is set to finish by late 2010 or early 2011.
The project is divided into two phases. Phase I has been completed and involved work from South Choctaw to Frenchtown Road. Work on Phase 1 began in 2005 and primarily consisted of land clearing and site preparation.
Phase II is currently underway and involves different installations. Two bridges that span the Comite River and part of Beaver Bayou is being worked on. Two additional bridges will be built over Beaver Bayou along with a bridge at Sullivan Bayou and a railway overpass.
Plans to improve the existing Greenwell Springs Road bridge and Greenwell Springs Road intersection are slated for completion in early 2009.
District 4 Councilman-elect Scott Wilson said he expects to make sure this project continues on track. District 4 Councilman Joe Greco was a large driving force behind the project but has reached his term limit.
Wilson said he respects the work Greco did to push for the project.
“I’m gonna try to pick up where Mr. [Greco] left off,” he said.
The benefits from this project are expected to mean growth for Central, Wilson said.
“The main thing is accessibility, but I think it’s going to be a great growing opportunity as well,” he said.
