The Benefits of Owning Pets
By

It is always a good time to consider an addition to the family in the form of a new pet.
A family pet provides so many positive effects. There is so much to be gained in the relationship between pet and owner. There are so many lessons that can be learned and shared between family members. Animals add so much to life.
The most important life lesson we learn from our pets is the unconditional love they are always ready to give. I think the love between a pet and its owner is a glimpse of the love we should have for God, and the love that God has for us.
Having a family pet teaches children responsibility. They can share in the care of their pet. It can make a child feel needed to know their pet relies on them for its daily needs.
People are not inhibited around their pets as they might be around people. Our relationships with our pets are less conflicted than any other in our lives. When we offer our honest emotions to our pets, they are not going to criticize or deliver conditions and expectations. It makes sense that we become increasingly fond of our pets. They not only give us unconditional love, but trust and loyalty as well. Many children lead tough lives these days, and this is another reason why having a pet is a welcome idea.
Most humans hold a certain fascination with animals of all kinds. According to a Stanford Alumni Association essay, for example, feeding backyard birds increased in popularity back in the 1950’s. It seems most people enjoy watching birds at bird feeders and birdbaths. It is a great pastime to provide food for these beautiful creatures. It is an alternative option for those who may not be able to own a pet because it offers the rewards of being in the company of colorful winged avians.
Dogs lift the spirits of lonely people. A study has found that nursing home residents felt less lonely after spending time alone with a dog. The residents shared their problems and stories in “intimate conversations” with the visiting dog, researchers said. The elderly are happier when bonding one-on-one with the animal. When a person goes to a nursing home, they lose all possessions. They need to belong; to love; and to be accepted. The dog provides the unconditional love they need.
Here are some health benefits of having a pet that are not enjoyed by non-pet owners:
- People who own pets typically visit the doctor less often and use less medication.
- Pet owners, on average, have lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure.
- Pet owners recover more quickly from illness and surgery.
- Pet owners deal better with stressful situations.
- Pet owners are less likely to report feeling lonely or depressed.
Animals add enjoyment and fulfillment to life. Pets are a worthwhile investment because they provide much joy and a connection that lasts forever.
